Pursuing Financial Independence (FIRE): What’s Your Target Number and Strategy?

I've been on the FIRE journey for a few years now, constantly tweaking my portfolio and expense projections to find that sweet spot for retirement. With inflation and market volatility lately, I'm curious to know what your specific target number is and the main strategy you're using to get there. Are you leaning towards traditional index fund investing, real estate, or perhaps a LeanFIRE approach to get out of the rat race sooner?

My target number is $1.2 million, and I'm sticking strictly to the 4% rule. I mostly follow the advice in this guide on how to start investing in index funds to keep my portfolio diversified and low-cost.

We are aiming for $1.5M for a Lean/Mid-FIRE lifestyle in a low cost of living area. Inflation has definitely made us push our timeline back by about two years, but we are holding fast to our monthly savings rate.

Real estate is my main vehicle. I own three rental properties that cash flow enough to cover my basic living expenses. Once my stock portfolio hits $500k, I'll officially consider myself retired.

I'm targeting $2 million to account for healthcare costs in the US. It's a daunting number, but automating my investments into broad-market ETFs has taken the emotional stress out of market volatility.

Barista FIRE is the plan for me. I want to hit $800k in my brokerage account and then transition to a low-stress job with health benefits just to cover day-to-day spending.

Honestly, with current inflation rates, I raised my target number from $1 million to $1.4 million. Better safe than sorry when looking at a 40-year retirement horizon.

I'm keeping things simple with a three-fund portfolio. As I was learning the ropes, I actually read up on how to start investing in index funds which completely changed my approach to passive wealth building.

FatFIRE is the goal here. We are aiming for $3.5 million so we don't have to change our current lifestyle at all. Heavy focus on tech stock options and real estate syndications.

LeanFIRE all the way. My target is just $600,000. I live a very minimalistic lifestyle and plan to slow-travel through Southeast Asia once I pull the trigger.

Market volatility doesn't bother me too much because I have a two-year cash cushion. Target is $1.8M using standard index fund accumulation.

I'm combining dividend investing with a small rental portfolio. Generating passive cash flow gives me peace of mind compared to relying entirely on selling shares during a downturn.

My target number is $1 million, and I am roughly 70% of the way there. Sticking to a high savings rate of 60% has been the absolute game-changer for my timeline.
